Synchronising Culture & Technology: Facilitating the Adoption of Multiple New Technologies in Frontline Policing

The assimilation of cutting-edge technological advancements in frontline policing is recognised as a critical initiative for driving operational improvements, increased efficiencies and public safety enhancements.

Despite the acknowledged potential, law enforcement agencies frequently encounter significant challenges when introducing new technologies, often obstructing the realization of their goals. This presentation sets out to examine the hurdles faced during the implementation of multiple novel technological applications and offers insights into the importance of culture when looking to enact lasting and transformational change.

Our research pinpoints key barriers to technology adoption in policing, such as information overloading for operational officers/staff, delays in procurement and development and inconsistent involvement of end users at all stages of the technical development cycles.

Such combinations often lead to reduced or resistant user buy-in, and a shift away from the technology's originally intended purpose. Addressing many issues, the presentation proposes a streamlined approach integrating user-focused design, incremental change, and strong change management support. This targeted framework aims to facilitate the gradual and effective assimilation of technology while promoting an innovative and adaptable organisational culture.
