From artificial intelligence and data science to cyber security, digital health, fintech, and advanced modelling, our researchers are shaping the technologies that underpin effective, secure and citizen-focused digital services. We create partnerships that bring together cutting-edge academic insight with the practical needs of government, industry, and society—turning ideas into impactful solutions.

A legacy of digital firsts

Manchester has long been a digital pioneer - home to the world’s first stored-program computer, ‘The Baby’, and the birthplace of graphene. Today, we continue that tradition by advancing AI, digital trust, and data-driven innovation. The government has even recognised this legacy by naming a £1million AI prize after ‘The Baby’ to inspire future breakthroughs.

Partnering for digital success

The University is home to flagship institutes and centres that accelerate innovation and collaboration, including the Christabel Pankhurst Institute for Health Technology and the Digital Futures platform, which connects over 1,000 researchers with partners to drive digital transformation across sectors.
